Gavel or Clio Draft (formerly LawYaw) - which software is right for you?
Gavel supports complex and/or conditional logic.
Example: "if marital status is married and state is California, show this paragraph."
Gavel also supports more complex logic than the example above, supports numerical calculations and date calculations, along with behind-the-scenes logic operators. This means that when you generate a document on Gavel, it should be nearly 100% perfect to send to the client.
Clio Draft only supports one level of logic, with no and/or operators.
Example: "if marital status is married."
Conditional logic is also not possible in the questionnaire. This means that you will be left manually editing your document to get it to a final place after it's generated on Clio Draft.
Gavel supports repeating items, which are lists of data that are useful for children, beneficiaries, shareholders, gift recipients, etc.
Because of this powerful feature, you can automate this into your document and you won't need to manually edit the document afterward, saving you a lot of time.
Clio Draft does not support repeating items, which is very limiting.
This means:
- You'll have sentences with empty fields in your generated document, and you will need to manually edit your document after generation.
- You won't be able to count the number of items (e.g., children) automatically.
- Building will take significantly longer.
Use a client questionnaire to collect data from clients and internal team-members, guide users through a whitelabeled workflow, guided workflow, and allow clients to sign into your portal to see their data.
Use Gavel Bundles to create client-facing legal products and charge users for them.
You can even replace Clio Grow with Gavel through custom client intake and questionnaires.
Gavel was chosen by Clio as their best integration and awarded $100k by Clio for the integration.
Gavel's Clio integration is more powerful, as it allows all custom fields, which LawYaw does not.
Now part of Clio, but still sold and priced separately.
Does not integrate with all Clio custom fields.
Gavel offers a "Gavel Expert" program, where experienced specialists can help you get your documents and workflows set up and finalized in Gavel Expert. Gavel Expert are as low as $35/hour depending on the level of legal expertise your Gavel Expert has.
Gavel provides unlimited support for all customers. Contact Gavel via phone, live screenshare, or email. Gavel also provides live training and a 24/7 knowledge center, no extra cost.
