Summary

Mauricio Duarte is a lawyer and notary with an LL.M. in American Law and Technology from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and the founder of LegOp. He spent four years in international arbitration before moving into legal technology, and he is a Partner at LegalPlus, where he advises technology companies and startups on venture capital and corporate matters. Over the past seven years, he has worked with law firms, legal aid organizations and legal departments across Latin America and the United States on technology adoption. He is a member of the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center and of the Technology Expert Committee of the Asian International Arbitration Center. Mauricio considers himself a technologist first and a lawyer who happens to practice law, and he founded LegOp to help other legal professionals get comfortable using technology rather than treating it as a threat to their work.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a lawyer from Universidad Francisco Marroquín (Guatemala) with an LL.M. from St. Thomas University (Minnesota). I worked for 4 years in international arbitration before devoting myself to technology and legal innovation. I am the COO and a Justice Entrepreneur for A2J Tech, a Denver (Colorado) company that builds legal tech solutions to improve access to justice. Also, I serve as an Of Counsel Partner of Legal Plus; a law firm focused on advising technology entrepreneurs and technology companies. Finally, I am also a Member of the Asian International Arbitration Centre Technology Expert Committee and a Member of the Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center Young Practitioners Group.

What is your document automation experience?

I have experience with Gavel and document automation projects for many years. Most of my experience is in corporate and technology matters. I have automated documents such as convertible notes, board consents, agreements for future equity, equity incentive plans, software agreements, and other corporate documents. Additionally, I also have experience in automating documents in English and Spanish (There is a lot of potential for automating workflows in Spanish and English. We can always help with the translation for your projects.)

Can you describe your process for how you build a document automation workflow?

Everything starts with having an initial meeting with the client and scoping out the work. With that said, the Scope of Work is of the utmost importance. Documenting all the needs and wants of the client is the only place to start.

After, we carefully review the documents and variables. In addition, we assess the features that can or can’t be incorporated into the project. After that initial assessment is completed, we provide an estimate of the time for the completion of the project.

Then, we start automating the documents or forms. However, this is not complete without the constant feedback and testing from the client and us. Testing and making changes is the only way of delivering a functional and satisfying workflow.
