Gavel makes AI contract review and legal document automation software for transactional lawyers, in-house legal teams and law firms. Gavel Exec reviews, redlines and drafts contracts in Microsoft Word against a team's own playbooks and precedent. Gavel Workflows turns client intake into finished legal documents. Gavel is part of Relativity, which announced its acquisition of Gavel on June 12, 2026.

Gavel makes two products for different parts of legal work. Teams use either one on its own or both together.
Gavel Exec is AI contract review and drafting software. It runs as an add-in for Microsoft Word (Windows, Mac, Word on the web and Microsoft 365) and as a web app. Gavel Exec applies a team's playbooks and precedent to redline full agreements as tracked changes, flag off-market and missing terms, benchmark clauses against market standards and draft new language, with the reasoning behind each change.
Gavel Workflows is legal document automation software that runs in the browser. Firms build intake forms and templates with conditional logic, and Gavel Workflows turns each client's answers into finished Word and PDF documents.
Examples of how teams use Gavel:

Dorna Moini, Gavel's CEO and Founder, was a litigation associate at Sidley Austin, where she defended companies in employment, whistleblower and trade secret cases. Through her pro bono work there, she launched HelpSelf Legal in 2017, a separate platform that helped domestic violence survivors prepare and file their restraining order paperwork.
Lawyers and legal aid organizations asked for the same kind of tool for their own practice areas. In 2019 Dorna founded Gavel, then called Documate, so any lawyer could automate documents and build client-facing legal tools without writing code. That platform is Gavel Workflows. In 2025, after customers asked for help negotiating and redlining contracts, Gavel launched Gavel Exec. In June 2026, Relativity announced its acquisition of Gavel.
“Lawyers shouldn’t have to choose between meaningful work and getting it all done. Gavel makes both possible.”
Dorna teaches the Legal Innovations Lab at USC Gould School of Law, where she earned her JD. Her honors include being named an ABA Journal Legal Rebel and a Fastcase 50 honoree in 2019 and one of ILTA's Influential Women in Legal Technology in 2022.
