How seven client intake tools stack up against Clio Grow on lead follow-up, Clio Manage connections, document output, price and trials.
The main Clio Grow alternatives are Gavel Workflows, Lawmatics, MyCase, Law Ruler, Lead Docket, Smokeball and CasePeer. Gavel Workflows fits intake ending in finished documents. Lawmatics fits firms wanting standalone customer relationship management (CRM) software. Law Ruler fits high-volume intake teams, CasePeer fits personal injury firms, Lead Docket fits Filevine firms, and MyCase and Smokeball fit firms switching practice management.
Last checked November 3, 2026. Gavel publishes this comparison and makes Gavel Workflows, which integrates with Clio Manage. Competitor details come from each vendor's website, help center and press releases, plus LawNext where marked. Intake pricing in particular is often quoted per firm, so ask each vendor for a written quote.

Gavel Workflows
Gavel Workflows is legal document automation software for law firms. It automates Word and PDF documents using client intake, questionnaires, and advanced workflow logic.
Firms can automate their own templates or start with Gavel's attorney-reviewed legal template library. Pricing starts at $83 per month with a free trial available.

Here is how Clio Grow and seven other intake tools compare on where they run, how they connect to Clio Manage, what they cost and how you can try them.
| Tool | Best for | Where it runs | Works with Clio Manage | Price | Free trial |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clio Grow (for reference) | Clio firms that want lead capture, consultations and hired matters in one suite | Cloud, part of Clio's suite with Clio Manage | Built in; hired matters move into Clio Manage | Included in Clio's Elite plan; add-on for Core and Signature. Clio publishes a $49 per user per month starting price for its plans but no price for Elite or the Grow add-on; Grow AI billed per hired matter | 7-day Clio trial, no credit card |
| Gavel Workflows | Firms whose intake should end in engagement letters and complete document sets | Browser, no download; standalone, alongside your practice management system | Native integration: pulls contacts, matters and custom fields and saves finished documents to the matter | From $83 per month | 7 days, no credit card |
| Lawmatics | Firms that want a standalone legal CRM with marketing email | Cloud CRM that connects to practice management systems | Native integration: creates the Clio Manage matter when a lead converts; mostly one-way | Not published; quoted after a demo; 3-user minimum on Essential and Premium | No self-serve trial listed; first month free offered through a demo |
| MyCase | Firms moving intake, cases and billing into one system | Inside MyCase practice management | Its own practice management system, so it replaces Clio Manage | Pro, which includes intake forms and legal CRM: $100 per user per month billed yearly, $120 billed monthly | 10 days, no credit card |
| Law Ruler | High-volume intake teams, especially at personal injury and mass tort firms, running call, text and email campaigns | Cloud CRM with a built-in softphone | Export to Clio button creates a Clio Manage matter from an intake record | Not published; one-time onboarding fee on Pro and Premium; billed monthly on an annual term | No free version; free demo |
| Lead Docket | Firms that want AI case summaries and referral-fee follow-up, especially on Filevine | Cloud lead management from Filevine | Direct integration listed by Lead Docket; Clio's App Directory says it sends leads into Clio as a new case | Not published; custom quote | Demo; no trial listed |
| Smokeball | Small firms that want intake forms filling Smokeball matters | Inside Smokeball practice management | Its own practice management system, so it replaces Clio Manage | Not published; Intake included in Prosper+, add-on for Smokeball's Boost and Grow plans | None listed; demo |
| CasePeer | Plaintiff personal injury firms that want intake inside case management | Inside CasePeer case management | Its own case management system, so it replaces Clio Manage | Pro, which adds client intake management: $130 per user per month (Basic $90, Advanced $160) | Demo; no trial listed |
Clio Grow covers the stretch from first inquiry to hired matter. Inquiries from connected channels land in a Lead Inbox, prospects move through a Matter Pipeline, Clio will build custom intake forms for you, and online booking can collect payment before a consultation to cut no-shows. Grow also sends documents for e-signature on a phone or tablet, reports which referral sources generate revenue, and runs multi-step email campaigns. Clio describes Grow as the place "where firms find and convert the right clients," and hired matters move into Clio Manage. Firms still shop around, usually for one of three reasons.
Best for: solo, small and mid-sized firms, on Clio Manage or another practice management system, that want clients to complete one questionnaire and receive an engagement letter, fee agreement and first drafts built from their answers.
Gavel Workflows is modern, no-code legal document automation with client intake built in. Clients answer a questionnaire carrying your firm's name, logo and colors on a computer or phone, see only the questions that apply to them, and can save and come back later; their answers then fill your Word and PDF templates and produce the whole document set. Litson PLLC cut its time from lead to client by 90%, and the immigration firm Sisu Legal says about 95% of the client data it collects at intake comes through its Gavel workflows.
Limits: Gavel Workflows is a document automation platform first. Gavel's site doesn't list lead pipeline tracking, marketing email campaigns, call tracking or consultation scheduling, so a firm that relies on those can keep Clio Grow or another CRM for lead follow-up and use Gavel Workflows from the intake questionnaire to signed documents. Lower plans cap builder seats and workflows, and Docusign and Stripe payments start on Pro.
More on the intake side: Gavel's legal intake software.
Best for: firms that want intake, lead nurturing and marketing email in one CRM that sits beside their practice management system.
Lawmatics headlines its site "Convert more leads with an AI-powered legal CRM." Its intake tools include a custom form builder, appointment booking, document automation, file requests and e-signature, and the CRM side adds pipeline management, conflict checking, drip email campaigns, audience segmentation and source reporting. It connects to Clio, MyCase, Filevine, Smokeball, PracticePanther and other practice management systems, plus CallRail, Google Ads and Meta Ads on the marketing side.
Limits: no published price, a 3-user minimum, billing tools sold separately below Enterprise, and a Clio sync that runs mostly from Lawmatics into Clio Manage.
Best for: small firms ready to leave Clio Manage and run intake, cases, documents and billing in one system with a published price.
MyCase is practice management software whose Pro plan includes "Client Intake Forms and Legal CRM." Its online intake forms use conditional logic, leads move through a built-in CRM pipeline with conversion tracked by practice area and marketing channel, and a submitted intake form can trigger case documents and task lists automatically.
Limits: intake comes with a per-user practice management subscription, so a firm that wants to stay on Clio Manage would be running two systems. See MyCase vs Gavel Workflows.
Best for: high-volume intake teams, especially at personal injury and mass tort firms, whose staff call, text and email large numbers of leads.
Law Ruler sells legal CRM, client intake and marketing automation as "Legal Software for Growing Law Firms." It pairs a custom intake form builder, one-click e-signature and document automation for Word, PDF and Excel with a built-in softphone, text and video messaging, and email, text and voice calling campaigns. When two firms both use Law Ruler, they can sync mass tort referral cases between their portals. Law Ruler's site lists eight practice areas: personal injury, mass tort, criminal defense, consumer protection, business, Social Security disability, immigration and employment law.
Limits: an annual term, an onboarding fee on the smaller plans, no published price, and a Clio export that staff start by hand from each intake record.
Best for: firms, especially Filevine customers, that want leads scored and summarized, referral fees chased and revenue reported by marketing source.
Lead Docket, a lead tracking and intake product that Filevine acquired in April 2020 (per LawNext), promises to help firms "Sign the Right Clients, Faster." It captures leads from web forms, call tracking numbers and answering services, guides staff through custom intake scripts, and its LeadsAI summarizes a case's key facts and predicts the likelihood of case success.
Limits: pricing and trial terms come only through sales, and signed cases move to the connected case management system for the work that follows.
Best for: small firms that want intake answers to land in the same practice management system they use for documents and billing.
Smokeball is practice management software with an Intake module that is included in its Prosper+ plan and sold as an add-on for its Boost and Grow plans (Smokeball's Grow plan is unrelated to Clio Grow). Lead intake forms embedded on your website send inquiries into Smokeball in real time, and matter intake forms sent through the client portal or by email fill the matter's fields. Smokeball says "AI builds your form in minutes" from a matter type and jurisdiction, or from a form you already use.
Limits: Intake costs extra below Prosper+, and choosing Smokeball means moving practice management off Clio Manage.
Best for: plaintiff-side personal injury and mass tort firms that want intake, case grading and case management in one product with a published per-user price.
CasePeer, owned by 8am, is "built exclusively for plaintiff-side personal injury law firms." Its Pro tier adds client intake management and unlimited two-way texting that accepts images, and Advanced adds the Intake Investigator Portal, case grades and scheduled texts.
Limits: CasePeer serves only plaintiff personal injury and mass tort practices, and adopting it means moving case management off Clio Manage.

Send clients a branded questionnaire, pull matter data from Clio Manage and generate the engagement letter and document set from one set of answers. From $83 per month, with a 7-day free trial and no credit card.
It depends on what your intake has to produce. Gavel Workflows suits firms that want intake answers to become engagement letters and complete document sets, and it runs from $83 per month, with a 7-day free trial and no credit card. Lawmatics suits firms that want a standalone legal CRM with marketing email. Law Ruler and CasePeer suit high-volume personal injury intake, and Lead Docket suits phone-heavy intake teams that track referral fees, especially on Filevine.
Both offer custom intake forms, consultation booking, a lead pipeline, e-signature and lead source reporting. Clio Grow is part of Clio's suite and moves hired matters into Clio Manage, while Lawmatics is a standalone CRM that creates the Clio Manage matter when a lead converts and also connects to MyCase, Filevine, Smokeball and other systems. Lawmatics lists audience segmentation, two-way texting from its Premium plan and an optional Time and Billing add-on, while Clio Grow adds Grow AI, which answers new leads by phone, email and website chat around the clock, and Clio will build your intake forms for you. Neither publishes a price for its intake product, and Lawmatics has a 3-user minimum.
Clio includes Grow in its Elite plan and sells it as an add-on for Core and Signature. Its pricing page shows only a starting price of $49 per user per month for Clio's plans and no price for the Grow add-on. Grow AI is billed per hired matter it helps convert, with a monthly spending target the firm sets, and existing Grow customers get their first three Grow AI hired matters at no cost. Clio's pricing page doesn't list the per-matter rate.
Gavel Workflows (7 days), MyCase (10 days) and Clio itself (7 days) all start without a credit card. Lawmatics offers a first month free through a demo, and Law Ruler, Lead Docket, Smokeball and CasePeer start with a demo.
Yes, through Clio Manage, where Clio Grow sends hired matters. Gavel Workflows' native integration pulls contacts, matters and custom fields from Clio Manage and saves finished documents back to the matter, so a firm can keep Grow for lead follow-up and use Gavel Workflows for questionnaires and documents.
Online intake questionnaires that show each client only the questions that apply, save progress and work on a phone. Clio Grow, Lawmatics, MyCase and Smokeball all offer online intake forms, and several of these tools can turn the answers into documents. Gavel Workflows is built around that step: the answers fill Word and PDF templates with conditional logic and generate the full document set.
This comparison uses publicly available product, pricing, and review information. Features, pricing, and access terms may change, so buyers should verify current details directly with each vendor.
Upload that letter, let Gavel Blueprint draft the intake workflow, and send it to a test client on a phone. From $83 per month, with a 7-day free trial and no credit card.
